Digital Photography 102 - 8 weeks

Thursdays - April 5th to May 24th

Explore the world of photography each week and learn the techniques to get the best photos of landscapes, nature, closeups, still life, portraiture, candids & people, action & sports, and creative abstracts. Emphasis will be placed on the photographic approach, what camera settings to use, how to optimize your vision and equipment needed.

This course includes in class demonstrations and course handouts.

*(It is NOT a prerequisite to have taken D101 to enjoy this course).


Week 1 - Landscapes.

- Placing the horizon.
- Using the "Hyperfocal Distance".
- Composing using diagonals.
- Polarizers and neutral density filters.

Week 2 - Nature.

- Composing using the "Thirds".
- Using "Patterns" in nature.
- Photographing Birds & Animals.
- Using Reflectors & Flash.

Week 3 - Close-ups.

- Getting close without "close-up" lenses.
- Getting to 1:1 magnification with macro lenses.
- How "depth-of-field" affects close-up subjects.
- Lighting close-up subjects.

Week 4 - Still Life.

- Defining a 3 dimensional object with light.
- Bringing out shape, substance, form and texture.
- Lighting opaque objects.
- Lighting transparent objects.

Week 5 - Portraiture.

- Using available light in outdoor portraiture.
- Using "fill" reflectors and flash.
- Studio approach to lighting.
- Posing your subject.

Week 6 - People & Candids.

- Approaching subjects to get the shot.
- How to place your subject in the frame.
- Using "fill flash".
- Photographing events.

Week 7 - Action & Sports.

- Using shutter speed to control motion.
- How to focus on moving subjects.
- Exposing for indoor lighting.
- Shooting sporting events.

Week 8 - Abstracts.

- Abstracting the natural world.
- Abstracting architecture & man made structures.
- Abstracting subjects that emit light.
- Special effects using "bokeh".
